The Brussels Griffon had its start as a "ratter".  They were bred for and used in stables to keep down the rat population and also as stable guard dogs in Brussels, Belgium.    The Brussels Griffon, also called the "Griffon Bruxellouis," is lively, alert, mischievous, and fearless, making for a very smart, expressive, delightful, and often amusing pet.
Part of the Griffon's ancestry includes the Affenpincher, pug and various Terriers.  Two coat types are found: the rough coat is the most common, and a smooth coated form also referred to as the "Petit Brabancon". Thanks to my puppies families for sharing these pictures with us of Taffy (upper left) and Jack (upper right).

Puppies to be Loving Pets!

When asking about a puppy, please let me know some about yourself and your family. Corresponding with you and understanding how the puppy will fit into your home is very important to me. There may be times when I might make a recommendation for a different puppy if one is too calm or too hyper for your family. My puppies have limited registration, with the understanding that the puppy will be spayed or neutered. These puppies are not to primarily be show dogs, but loving pets, though your  new puppy can be shown at 4-H, AKC  good citizen, obedience, or agility shows which help the puppy and his or her new family develop a fun activity together.

Thanks, Terry

It will probably be fall or early winter before we have Brussels Griffons again this year.

Griffons are great little family dogs as they love to romp around with the kids.
You can see Haley (pictured here) and her new little Griffon, Jade, are very happy together.
They also make great companion dogs for older couples or individuals as they are very sensitive to people. I have several Griffon families who use their Griffons for therapy dogs in nursing homes. Most of my Griffon families say they wouldn't have any other breed of dog after owning a Griffon!

To see a video of a Griffon "in action",
please see the below note from one of my Griffon families:

Hope all is well with you and Dennis. Just wanted to send a quick update regarding a Brussels Griffon puppy we purchased from you a couple years ago (Gus)! As I've written to you in the past, we have made a couple videos of him that have been really popular on Youtube and Google ('A Griffon Day' actually has the number one spot on both). We just posted a new one today because people kept asking for them. Just thought we'd send them to you in case you might be interested in posting them on your
site! Thanks for the great (and now fairly famous) dog! Enjoy! George

From a Happy Brussels Griffon owner:
I bought a Brussels Griffon for my fiancée last Christmas.  I looked at many different options, especially locally.  At first I was concerned about having the puppy shipped via airplane. I talked to Terry about it a few times and she ensured me that Pet Air were very professional and it was a completely safe process for Buffy.  I went ahead and purchased Buffy via PayPal and everything went extremely smooth...from the day I paid, to today!
Courtney and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying a Brussels Griffon from Terry & Dennis.  We absolutely LOVE Buffy.  She has the best personality in the world.  She doesn't yip, she's sweet, she snuggles and sleeps through the night, she's great on road trips in the car, she has flown to New York and back with us twice this year (and she gets to fly in the cabin with us because she's <20 lbs).  Sometimes we just call Terry out of the blue to thank her for Buffy, she's that great.

I've always been a big dog guy, but I would never get another dog unless it was a Brussels.  I really believe that by Terry & Dennis raising the puppies around kids and other dogs has been extremely helpful too.  Buffy isn't scared of other dogs or kids, which is great considering we have 8 nieces and nephews.   Sincerely, Andrew & Courtney

Terry,   Just wanted to send you a few pictures of Buddy AKA Suzy's baby boy Frosty. We are enjoying him so much. Thanks so much for everything.  Keisha

Another Happy Griffon owner:

IF I EVER DECIDE TO GET ANOTHER BRUSSELS GRIFFON IN THE FUTURE I KNOW YOU ARE THE PERSON I WILL GO TO.
 HAPPY HOLIDAYS, MARILYN VELEZ

Griffons normally get along very well with other animals.
Here is Gus with his new brother.
Thanks Jen and Eric for the picture! It's great!

Many people have questions concerning the looks of a smooth coat Griffon. Pictured below are two pictures of what a smooth coat Griffon looks like. You can tell that they are very different in looks then the rough coat Griffon. The smooth coat Griffons will actually be in the same litter as rough coat babies. It is around 4 weeks old before the coat style can really be seen. They both have great temperaments! They both do well with families and other pets. It seems for some reason that my smooth coat babies have a little funnier "personality" then the rough coat, but they all very enjoyable, personable, expressive little dogs.

Shipping:

Shipping by Air is done with Pet Air. They are a company that specializes in just shipping pets. The shipping cost is paid to me and I pay Pet Air and purchase the items needed for shipping the puppy.

The reason that I use Pet Air rather then making my own shipping arrangements is that I have found that a company like Pet Air as compared to an individual can better get the airlines to do the best for the puppy. Sorry to say, many airlines are not always courteous or helpful to an individual, but they will help a company who has the option of pulling much more business from them should they decide that the airline is not helpful with the shipping of pets.  If there are plane cancellations, delays, or changes that need to be made, Pet Air has the resources to make these changes quicker and easier then an individual might have.

Shipping is $250 - $300 for the continental United States.
Shipping to Canada and Alaska is 375 - $474 which includes the airfare, Pet Air's fare, the special crate needed - which is a very good quality crate that will last many years with proper care, the cost of mailing the puppy kit (puppy food, paper work, etc) for the puppy, and other misc. cost associated with shipping the puppy.

The timing for when I let the puppy go by shipping will be based on the age, breed, and size of the puppy. Weather plays a big part in the air shipping of a puppy. There may be times in mid summer or mid winter when the shipping is changed or delayed due to bad or extreme weather.  Pet Air does what ever needs to be done to best assure the safety of the puppy.  Pet Air only ships for me on Thursdays unless it is a holiday or weather impedes the shipping.
I will try to accommodate you the best I can with the shipping, but the overall decision  when to ship the puppy will be my decision based on the health, safety, and best interest of the puppy.

Due to the high cost and amount of time it takes to ship overseas and Hawaii, I don't do any shipping other then the Continental United States, Canada, and Alaska. Hawaii also has some very harsh quarantine laws for new pets coming in, so I do not ship to Hawaii.

Crate Training:
Crate training can be great for teaching your puppy to sleep in a crate at night or to use for very small periods of time during the day. But PLEASE do not put your puppy in a crate all day while you are at work, only to let him out for a few house in the afternoon and evening, then put him or her back in the crate for all night.  Even if you are able to take your dog out of the crate once or twice a day during the day, this is not the proper place for your  puppy or dog to spend the majority of their daytime hours. We would not like to be locked in a room with just enough room to move around in and sleep in for the majority of each 24 hour period. Our puppies and dogs don't like that much either. Knowing how much puppies and dogs like to play and need room to play, I feel that this can be very cruel to a puppy or dog. I will not knowingly sell a puppy to someone who plans on using a crate both day and night for their young puppy or older dog.

I suggest using a baby gate and gating off an area such as a large bathroom or a utility room in order to give the puppy limited space while allowing the puppy to have room to play, toys to play with an open crate with bedding for sleeping (the front gate off the crate) and puppy pads, a doggie litter box, or my preference, newspapers, in case the puppy HAS TO GO before someone lets him or her outside. Some puppies (just like children) take time to learn to "hold" it until "mom or dad" comes to take them out.  There are also very nice puppy playpens for dogs that also give more room for play while keeping them in a relatively small small area. The two ex-pens pictured here can be purchased at: www.dog.com

Brussels Griffons, especially, should not be kept in a crate for long periods of time during the day. They HAVE to have room to run and play as they are such high energy little dogs. You will have a puppy that will misbehave if you keep them in a crate all day on giving them minimum attention in the late afternoons or at night before putting them in a crate again.  This misbehavior will come out in many ways, but the most common way is to soil anything that they can that will upset you and give them attention, even if it is negative attention. For those of you who have children, maybe you can relate to this idea that if a child does not have positive attention, they would rather have negative attention then no attention. Puppies are also very much this way.  For those of you who don't have children, this is a vital lesson to learn if you are planning on a family someday! Teaching a puppy is surprisingly like teaching a child.
